Customize your hair routine with + A Giveaway!

My hair has taken a lot during my lifetime, from the time I was twelve to fourteen I dyed my hair black, then once I reached High school and colored hair was allowed I bleached my hair and dyed it bright. From the time I was in high school until I was about twenty one my hair was every color of the rainbow, until it reached a point when it started looking damaged and thinned out a bit as I got older. So for the last few years I've maintained my natural hair color, and I don't straighten it as often as I used too instead I keep it the natural wavy curly state it grows. My hairs natural state is caught between curly and wavy, it is also a bit puffy and frizzy, always has been.

When it comes to shampoo/conditioner I've always just kind of bought what caught my eye and never landed on a "favorite" brand to buy because they all seemed about the same to me. Recently I learned about a newer brand called Formulate who creates customized shampoo/conditioner until I was contacted by one of their members. Yes, you read that right their shampoo/conditioner is customized to YOU! Plus their products are Preservative free, Sulfate free, Paraben free and Cruelty free.

You start out your journey by filling out a personalized hair profile, they ask you several different questions to narrow down exactly what you are looking for and your current hair state. They ask how long your hair is, if your scalp is sensitive, how thick your hair is, what types of tools you use on your hair and more, the process takes about five minutes. At the end they give you a summary of everything and the formula selected for you based off of your answers! I do want to note that if you need to go back to fix something or you decide to come back later to make a purchase and re-fill out the profile your ingredients list may be slightly different as they have a few products that do the same thing and they get swapped out from what I noticed (I took the test three times to see how the end results would be). You get to select your scent as well and how strong of a fragrance you want. Everything is saved to your Formulate profile which looks like this:

Once your profile is complete the last step is to order your set and wait for it to arrive! You can order full size which is $49 for one shampoo and one conditioner each 14oz, or you can order a trial set for $19 which comes with one 4oz bottle of each. How long the bottle lasts depends on you, I typically wash my hair every 3-4 days otherwise it puffs up or looks greasy from over washing so I followed the same schedule with this set. I've been using it for about two weeks and a half weeks, I have about half a bottle left but I noticed when I first received the bottles they aren't filled up all the way there is about a 1-2 inch space from the product to the top of the bottle. So I'd say I've used about a quarter of the product. It comes with a easy to follow directions, they recommend using four pumps of the shampoo to get rid of any residue, grease or dirt on your hair then rinsing it followed by one more four pump wash with the shampoo. After the second rinse they recommend four pumps of the conditioner as well then leaving it in for a few minutes before rinsing. You may experience an adjustment period going from products with sulfate to a sulfate free product.

What if you don't like your formula or it isn't working quite as you expected? No need to worry, on the Formulate app you can provide feedback to their chemists and request a re-formulated set at no additional cost to you. They want you to have a product that works for you and want you to continue using their products so they want to make sure you are happy and expect some may change their forumlas. I myself changed my formula, as I mentioned my hair is caught in the middle of wavy and curly, I usually have large loose wavy curls. The formula seemed to be making my hair somewhat straighter while separating the curls but it looked more out of control and fluffy than normal. A second thing I noticed was the conditioner of this set didn't seem to wash out right and instead super absorbed into my hair, which made it smell freshly washed for several days but it made it look greasy at the same time.  I also didn't like the smell of the scent I choose which was "At Dawn" a combo of rose, green apple and pear it was too over whelming. For my new set I asked for a little more frizz control and a new scent "Freshly Squeezed" which is tangerine and sweet orange. It didn't take long for my new set to arrive.

How do you know if they actually changed the formula? The main sign that showed me the formula had changed was how the conditioner looks, if you look at the image above both are the conditioner I tried  yet they look completely different.

Did it work for me? I would say yes. There is not a giant change in how it looks, my hair is still a bit frizzy but I don't think that will ever change no matter what I use but I can tell a difference. My hair looks less dry and looks healthier than it did before, the main change is how it feels. When I run my hand through my hair it feels healthier, lighter, smoother and it seems like I get less tangles. Before it just felt dry. My hair also seems easier to style and stays feeling cleaner longer than with traditional shampoo/conditioners. My scalp feels healthy + moisturized, I have not noticed any issues with dandruff or feeling like my scalp is dried out from the rising temperatures outside. In the photo above on the left you can see my hair looks a bit dry and extra frizzy, on the right you can see that it looks more moisturized and less frizzy. I really like the new scent in the second formulate set I received and my husband enjoys the small as well because it is both refreshing and smells clean. Will I continue to use this? I would like to continue using it because I do like what it does to my hair, however I want to see how long the bottles last first before deciding.

Exploring Brazil with Eat2Explore

I've seen ads for several different food/cooking subscription boxes and most of them are the same, they send you some food and a recipe to try out which can get a little repetitive if you are looking for something a little more. I always try to look for fun activities to do with my family as a whole and Eat2Explore covers that along with being a food based subscription box. A one month subscription is $24.95, however you can save a little money if you opt for a six to twelve month subscription that will drop your cost a bit. If you have someone in your family that is allergic to Gluten they offer gluten free boxes.

Eat2Explore is a wonderful way to explore the world through food while connecting with your family, it allows you to experience what they call the three C's - Country, Culture & Cuisine. Each box features a different country each month and comes with three recipes (each makes 4 servings), the essential spices/sauce mixes you'll need, a shopping list for the fresh ingredients needed, educational activity/information sheets for the featured country, fun cooking tools, plus a pin/sticker/passport. Does someone from your family have a dietary restriction? They have you covered "We understand that each family has it's own unique food preferences, so we've ensured that our explorer boxes can accommodate different dietary needs. We leave the shopping for fresh ingredients up to you, allowing you to customize your eat2explore experience."

The box we received was for Brazil, all of the recipes we received looked pretty delicious and made us excited to try them out. One recipe was pork chops with sides, another was for meat filled pastries served with a watermelon/tomato salad and the last was for a shrimp dish. Thus far we've only tried out one recipe which you'll see below, the other two I am waiting on until we can get together with my mom/step-dad and make it during a family night.

I love that they provided a separate paper with all of the ingredients you need to pick up at the store, looking at the recipes online it looks like they provide a version of some of the recipes you'll receive in their boxes. For example the shrimp dish recipe we received is called "Moqueca" Online it states that it is a Brazilian recipe based on a salt water stew made various fresh fish caught off the coast however it is altered to be a "Shrimp Moqueca" which includes just shrimp to make it easier to shop for. For the Moqueca I purchased shrimp, spinach, rice, a lemon, a red bell pepper, and onion and a can of diced tomatoes. Eat2explore included the coconut milk and spices we needed.

My family got together at my mothers house to cook this with her and my step-dad so we could all try it out. The recipe states it makes four servings, however we added an extra cup of rice and it ended up feeding five adults and two children leaving us quite full. The dish was fun and easy to make! Like Eat2Explore stated all families have their own preferences when it comes to how they cook, I cooked almost everything as directed however I did make a few small changes instead of making it stew like I removed some of the liquids then mixed in the rice to make it more of a hearty dish. I also took a small portion of the dish and cooked it separate without shrimp because my daughter and mother do not like sea food.

We are big bread lovers so we served this with a roll on the side. Everyone really seemed to enjoy the dish and everyone finished their serving feeling full and satisfied after dinner. I was glad I added the extra rice because there are a ton of shrimp in this recipe and I think they would have over taken the dish a bit without the extra rice. The kids also had a lot of fun learning new facts about Brazil, and my daughter made sure to track everyone's rating/opinion on the meal in the little passport provided. I look forward to testing out the other two recipes as well once I get a chance.

Looking for a Brazilian inspired dessert to go with the recipes included in this box? My work has a small culture inspired project where we all made dishes for different countries assigned to us, for mine I made Arroz Doce which is a sweet rice. It is so good and I highly suggest trying it out, it would make a great addition to this explorer box.

2019 Arizona Renaissance Festival

There are only two weekends left to visit the Arizona Renaissance Festival before it is over for the season, so if you are wanting to visit now is the time to go! Tickets are $28 per adult and $18 per child at the festival, however you can buy slightly discounted ($1-$2 per ticket) tickets on their website or at Fry's Marketplace. The festival is opened from 10am until 6pm, it is located off of the US 60 in Gold Canyon, Arizona, for us it is about an hour drive if traffic isn't too bad. You can find a coupon for One free child per One paid adult Here.

Before you go there are three things you should keep in mind/do:

1. It is a good idea to go early if you don't want a long walk from the car to the entrance. Last year we arrived 15 minutes before gates opened and we were parked only three rows away from the entrance. This year it took a bit longer for all of us to get dressed and ready so we didn't get there until 15 minutes after they opened and we were marked about half a mile from the entrance. They do have a "VIP" parking area which costs extra, however I don't see anywhere on their site that tells you how to purchase tickets for that lot, and they have Handicap parking as well that is closer to the gate.

2. There are a ton of free shows to see and plenty of booths to "window shop" at however you will want to budget at least a $100-$150 for the festival to really enjoy the sights, vendor booths and food. All of the performers ask for tips, though it is not required for you to tip anyone it is how most of them make their living so we always make sure to bring actual cash with us for the shows we see. Some of the exhibits, rides and games require payment as well.

3. Bring sunblock & a water bottle! You are allowed to bring in one 16-24oz sealed water bottle per person, they have drinking fountains near all of the bathrooms so you can re-fill them if you don't mind fountain water or you can purchase a small water bottle at the food stalls for $2 each. Even on cool days, you will be out in the sun and several food booths and experiences have lines so you'll be planted in the sun. This year we completely forgot sunblock and I ended up with a red and angry sunburn.

Another great tip to keep in mind is plan to be there for most if not all of your day, there are fourteen different stages with performances all through out the day. Many of the acts are on for thirty to forty-five minutes, between watching several shows, browsing the vendor booths, grabbing lunch and everything else the festival has to offer time will fly by. We arrived at 10:15am and ended up leaving about 3:30pm when everyone was exhausted from the sun and walking around (you'll want to wear comfortable shoes, the festival is huge).

In all we saw three shows, took photos with our favorite Dragon, grabbed lunch and walked around several of the shops during our time at the festival. There is a ton to see and you may not get to do everything in one day so if you are wanting to see it all you can purchase a season pass at the front gate so you can visit as often as you'd like during the open season. One of my husbands favorite shows is the whip cracker and mine is the bird show, we got lucky and they were back to back so we grabbed a bench seat in the shade and relaxed with the kids while we watched the show. Shows tend to fill up quickly especially the more popular shows like the bird show so you might want to get there a few minutes early to get a decent seat. Many of the vendor booths have signs asking you not to take photos otherwise I'd share some of the wares with you!

If you are a foodie there are dozens of options to choose from along with lots of sweet treats, we each have our favorites my husbands being the spinach bowl and mine being the broccoli cheddar soup bowl but this year we were a bit disappointed. They had run out of the broccoli cheddar bowl and stated more wouldn't be ready for about forty-five minutes, at that point we had been in line for about twenty minutes in the direct sun and had acquired sunburns so I decided to skip the bowl, my husbands spinach bowl was so full it was getting every where and this year it tasted and looked kind of odd so most of it wasn't eaten. To make up for lunch we did stop by a chocolate booth on the way out and purchased a few goodies. Food costs are what you'd expect for an event like this, $3 for a small lemonade or soda, $2 small bottles of water, $4 for a slice of pizza, $7 per soup or dip bowl, small chocolates are 3 for $10 or two big pieces of chocolate such as a chunk of fudge + a slice of cheesecake for $13, and other prices vary.

One of our favorite parts about the festival is that anyone is allowed to dress up, this year the whole family dressed up and it was a lot of fun. There are several performers and acts that walk around the festival freely who stop to interact with guests and take photos. Over all we had a great time, at the end everyone was slightly "grumpy" just due to the rising temperature and being exhausted but it didn't spoil the fun we had and we highly suggest you head out to check it out before it is done for the year.

You Are Light by Aaron Becker

Reading is always quite enjoyable on its own, but that experience is made even better when the book has an added bonus such as flaps, or other types of interactive pages. I was recently sent a copy of a book called "You Are Light" which includes cut outs all the way through the book, each one has a plastic colored piece in it which glows when held up to the light.

You Are Light is a board book that contains sixteen pages and retails for $15.99 it can be purchased from the Candlewick website, Indiebound, Barnes and Nobles, or Amazon. There are twelve+ different colored circles, each attached to a different page, when you first start you'll see all the colors at once and as you flip through the book the colors become less while still corresponding with the page the colors are attached too.

This is a sweet and short book which talks about the light from the sun and how it effects the Earth and tells you about how it helps plants grow. You Are Light is an easy read and perfect for readers at the beginner level, it makes a perfect quick bedtime story for the nights when you still have a lot to get done. The book ends off with "The light is you. And you are light." which I thought was a great ending for this book. I do wish the plastic pieces were slightly thinner so I could shine a flash light on them to reflect the colors onto the wall.

Wellness Gravies from!

Aleister is excited to bring you a new review featuring a wet cat food from the Wellness brand. When it comes to food Aleister knows when it is time for his daily wet food bowl and will become quite vocal to let you know if you are late giving him his food. When we get to test out new wet foods he is over the moon, because to him testing out new brands is like a person getting to try out new desserts.

This month we are trying out the Wellness Healthy Indulgent Gravies food pouches which come in a case of 32  3oz pouches through Chewy for $37.96. Instead of one giant case arriving containing all of the pouches you'll be sent four smaller boxes that each have eight pouches in two different flavors. The two flavors included are Chicken/Turkey and Tuna/Mackerel and both are grain-free, the first we opened was the tune/mackerel and it smelled just like a can of tuna being opened. Each pouch is easy to open and we had no issues getting the wet food out since the pouches were easy to squeeze.

Typically when you think of 3oz of food you might not think it equals out to a lot of food especially because a lot of cat food brands put only small amounts of food in their pouches. That wasn't the case with Wellness, I was quite surprised how much food as packed into each pouch, although I did expect a bit more gravy since they are called "Gravies". Aleister normally finishes most or all of his wet food but he was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of food in the pouch so he only finished about half of the meal. Cutting back to half of a pouch is more beneficial for us so the other half we keep in a sealed baggie and put it in the fridge for the next day so technically with a case of pouches we can get 64 days of food instead of just 32 which helps lower the cost of cat food even more! If you are searching for a new brand of cat food, a new toy or even medications Chewy has hundreds of products for sale at great prices.

Aside from pet food, what is another pet product you like buying online? What kind of pets do you have?

Snack healthier with Wicked Crisps

Many people are snackers who enjoy nibbling and snacking on snacks through-out the day, my family is no different, we enjoy a good snack and like to keep munchies in the house. Snacking isn't always the healthiest thing to do so we like keeping lots of healthier options around like apples, bananas, apple sauce, carrots, etc. but sometimes you get a craving for something crunchier like chips. Wicked Crisps is a healthier option to traditional potato chips, as described on their website "Wicked Crisps are the surprisingly healthy, baked chip with an irresistible, delectable taste. Chocked full of nutrition from veggies, herbs, and spices, in a variety of unique flavors, Wicked Crisps is a guilt-free treat for your taste buds"

I was recently sent four different flavors to try out with my family, we received Red Curry Hummus, Cheesy Cheese Pizza, Spring Vegetable Medley, and Sweet Potato Souffle. They also offer Roasted Garlic with Asiago Cheese, Spinach Parmesan, and Sea Salt with Hummus. Prior to last month, I had never heard of Wicked Crisps but I was immediately drawn to their packaging and flavors because they fit in with what I normally look for flavor wise. My kids are six and ten, both can be a bit picky with food so how well did these stand up to my two little critics? Let's find out!

Before getting into what we thought of each flavor I want to note that the serving size on each is a pretty decent size, the crisps themselves are about 2 1/2-3" long and puffy so they are quite filling. These crisps are made in a facility that processes products with soy so beware if you have a soy allergy, I also wanted to point out some of these products have milk/honey solids so check the ingredients list if you are vegan. You can find Wicked Crisps online via Amazon or in-store at various Food Lion locations, in the near future they will be available at TJ Maxx and Marshalls as well.

We think the Sweet Potato Souffle (shown above) is more of a dessert crisp for when your sweet tooth is calling but you don't want candy or sweets. You can see in the photo above that each one is dusted with sugar and brown sugar. These give you the perfect balance of sweet and crunch with each bite! With the combination of the sugar and vanilla baked into this we all thought they tasted a little like those marshmallows they put in cereal, we just couldn't quite place our finger on the exact cereal brand it reminded us of. You don't need a ton of these to feel satisfied, five or six does the trick so this bag will last a while. Each bag contains four servings (about 21 crisps), which contains 120 calories and 23g of carbs.

Cheesy Cheese Pizza was the clear favorite of the four, in fact it was enjoyed so much I don't have a photo of the pizza crisps on their own since there were no crisps left to take a photo of. The crisp had a wonderful aroma and are packed full of flavor, they start out with a tomato crisp and load it up with cheesy goodness. They tasted great on by themselves or if you are a dipper they go well with various dips as well. Each bag contains four servings (about 21 crisps), which contains 120 calories and 22g of carbs.

Spring Vegetable Medley (shown in the image, above left) is a mixture that contains five different unique vegetable flavors which are tomato, spinach, broccoli, sweet potato, and field pea. I didn't think these were too bad however, my kids said they found them a bit bland and wished they had a little more seasoning to them. If you are feeling the same, they go well with a veggie dip to add a bit more flavor. Each bag contains four servings (about 21 crisps), which contains 120 calories and 22g of carbs.

Curry isn't typically a flavor I would purchase myself, simply because I've never tried it and I think of "spicy" when I hear it so going into this I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the Red Curry Hummus flavor. I am actually a pretty big fan of this flavor, it has so many bold and delectable flavors trying just one made me want to make a small bowl of them all for myself. The red curry wasn't spicy like I thought it was going to be, I can't quite describe or compare it to anything as it was an all new flavor to me. For anyone who loves curry or wants to try out something with curry that isn't also loaded with hot spicy flavors, I highly suggest giving these a try. My son didn't think they were too bad, but my daughter and husband didn't like them so I pretty much get the bag to myself. Each bag contains four servings (about 21 crisps), which contains 110 calories and 19g of carbs.

Candlewick Press Review!

My kids and I always jump for joy when we spot a package from Candlewick Press on the porch because it means new books to read together! We recently received a box and have a few great titles to share with you with more book reviews on the way plus a fun giveaway next month for Poetry month. All of their titles can be purchased directly on their website or can be purchased via inbound, amazon or Barnes & Nobles.

Stardust (Retail $16.99) - Written by Jeanne Willis. Have you ever felt overshadowed by a sibling, a friend, a co-worker or just overshadowed in general? The main character of this book often feels overshadowed and this book follows along with her journey to realizing that she is special and a star in her own way. She feels like her sister is the star and she gets over looked but to her grandfather she is a star so they gaze out at the stars together as he tells her a story about everyone and everything being made from stardust and that each and every person shines in different ways.

I found this book to be quite heartwarming and relate-able to people of all ages because most of us at one point have felt overshadowed, or just felt plain ignored/forgotten. This book helps remind everyone that we are all unique, we all shine in our own ways and just because we might not think that we shine or have a spark it doesn't mean that someone else doesn't think that about us. I also loved the illustrations through out this book,  the colors used and the way the book was illustrated is beautiful.

The Whole Wide World and Me (Retail $15.99) -  Written by Toni Yuly. This is a title aimed towards younger children between the age of 2-5, it is a picture book that showcases the world of wonders around us. This book has simple yet captivating imagery through out the book as it follows along with the adorable little girl above as she talks about various aspects of the world such as a leaf falling from a tree and that both herself and the leaf are a small part of something bigger, that we are all part of something bigger. If you are looking for a quick read with your children before bed this is it, and it would make a perfect book for children practicing their reading skills.

How I am celebrating National Reading Month!

March is National Reading Month! Growing up I was always a bookworm, I have fond memories of visiting the book store with my Great Grandmother who would let me select a new book each time we went, it always made me so excited to find a new adventure. I could often be found curled up on the sofa or on my bed with my nose stuffed into a book, and many of my favorites I've read a few times over. While I don't have as much time to read as I used to I still try to squeeze in reading as often as I can and I encourage my children to read often and plenty.

Before my children could begin reading on their own, I started purchasing books to read out loud to them and progressed the reading levels as they began to read on their own. My oldest loves to read as much as I do and my youngest likes to read books with me but now that he is able to mostly read on his own (he is in Kindergarten) I've found him reading books by himself more and more. In our home we each have a book shelf in our room along with a book shelf in the play room that are all stuffed with books, though we still need to read many of them we still try to add new books as often as possible. So to celebrate National Reading Month we will be heading out to find a new book or two for the kids to read. For myself, I am setting a goal for myself to finish the book I am currently reading along with the next to books in the series PLUS I want to help one of you celebrate reading by hosting a giveaway.

I recently found a book journal that challenges you and your family to read 100 books aloud together and record each book along the way. Each page has space for you to write the books title, the date you read it on and memories you have about the book. You can write about how the book made you feel, which characters were your favorite, the possibilities are endless. The main purpose of this is to give you a fun challenge to complete together and writing everything down helps you remember details or books you may forget along the way. I know that sometimes when I read a series by the time the next book comes out I may forget how the last one ended so having something like this would be helpful.

I would like to give a copy of this book away to one of my readers to complete with their children. While this book will be fun for the winner, I can't possibly give this book away without a new book to go with it could I? Of course not! I will be sending SIX children's books along with this to start the winning family off with some brand new books to read together. The six titles are "Great Polar Bear", "Walk With Me", "The Whole Wide World & Me", "The Day War Came", "Storm" and "The Stuff Of Stars" all of which are great for beginner & level 1-2 readers.

One lucky reader is going to win a copy of "Our Read-Aloud Family Journal" and a box of children's books.
